FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Project Receives a $120,000 Grant
(Miami, June 26, 2014) -- The Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties regional Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (FBCCEDP) at the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County has been awarded a $120,000 grant from Health Foundation of South Florida. The funds received will be used to effectively target women in particular populations at greatest risk of developing breast and cervical cancer, as well as to target those specific groups not receiving the recommended cancer screenings in the last five years. Funds from this grant will be used to offset the difference in cost between the analog and digital mammograms for over 2000 women.
"Through our partnership with Health Foundation of South Florida and their generous contribution, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County will be able to provide additional breast and cervical cancer screenings in our community, thus improving the health of our residents through early detection and education," said Lillian Rivera, RN, MSN, PhD, and Administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County.
The Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program is a special program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Florida Department of Health that offers breast and cervical cancer screenings. These services are provided through a partnership with Federally Qualified Health Centers, primary care physicians and community hospitals. Services are free if you are uninsured; between the ages of 50-64 and have not been screened in the past year and meet financial eligibility criteria. The program also provides health education on the importance of screening as it relates to the early detection of breast and cervical cancer.
As of July 1st 2001, women who are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer through the program and are citizens or permanent resident of five years in the Unites States are eligible to apply for the Mary Brogan Medicaid Treatment Act. This treatment act allows the woman to receive treatment paid for by Medicaid.
We will also provide specialty diagnostics tests when needed, transportation, case management, referrals to resources available within the community for financial assistance for treatment, if they do not qualify for the Mary Brogan Medicaid Treatment Act.
