Tallahassee, Fla.—The Florida Department of Health in Leon County, in partnership with Leon County Schools, has launched a “Back to Schools” campaign to help ensure students and parents are ready for the first day of school.
Leon County public schools open August 15 for the 2016-17 school year.
The hit film “Finding Dory” inspired the campaign, with a graphic featuring various species of colorful tropical fish. Messaging on the sides of the fish reminds parents of the importance of children receiving vaccinations, completing physicals, developing medical care plans and gathering medical records before students return to the classroom.
Parents are encouraged to book vaccinations through their medical providers, with DOH-Leon serving as a backup provider.
DOH-Leon offers back-to-school vaccinations regardless of ability to pay. Appointments can be booked through the Roberts & Stevens Clinic, 1515 Old Bainbridge Road. Phone: (850) 606-8000.
“We look forward to another outstanding year in Leon County Schools and are excited about the first day on Monday, August 15,” School Board Chair Dee Dee Rasmussen said. “It is important to remember that you cannot be registered for school unless you have the proper immunizations. We are proud to partner with the Leon health department to ensure that our parents and students have every opportunity to get the necessary shots.”
DOH-Leon recommends that parents consult their medical providers on the need for back-to-school physicals and medical care plans that address the needs of children with asthma, allergies, diabetes or other special medical conditions.
Leon County schools also require that children’s medical records are complete and up to date before school opens.
