New Garden is Oasis in Food Desert

Lee County, FL—Dozens of local organizations led by the Florida Department of Health in Lee County are gathering to cut the ribbon to an oasis of healthy food in the midst of the Pine Manor Neighborhood food desert at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014.

DOH-Lee Acting Administrator William Mallett and Lee County Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass will speak briefly at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Pine Manor Community Garden. Following the ceremony will be a health fair with free health screenings, healthy snacks, bike helmets and health and safety education for attendees. Lee Schools Superintendent Nancy Graham is also expected to attend.

The community garden will give residents an opportunity to grow, harvest and enjoy the convenient access to fresh produce.

The event will be at the Pine Manor Community Center, 5547 Tenth Ave., Fort Myers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is welcome.
